Turn a broad label into an agreed decision and communication plan.
Annie’s Nannies describes proxy parenting as care while parents are away. Ask what authority, relief and support your particular assignment includes.
Translate the label
“Proxy parenting” can signal extended periods when parents are away, but it does not create unlimited parental authority for a nanny. Ask the agency or family what tasks and decisions the phrase means in this particular job. Start with children, hours, overnight coverage and the adult who remains responsible for parent decisions.
Draw the decision boundary
Sort decisions into routine tasks you can carry out from an agreed brief, matters requiring a parent’s approval and situations routed to a named backup adult. Ask who can authorize travel, school changes, major purchases and schedule changes. Do not accept a vague promise that you can simply decide everything.
Plan communication before absence
Identify normal update times, urgent contact routes and what happens if a parent is temporarily unreachable. Document who receives school or provider messages and who answers questions beyond your agreed role. If multiple adults give instructions, ask for one method to resolve differences.
Try a fictional week
Fictional example: a parent is away for four nights and a school event moves to a different day. The nanny can record the new date and ask the named parent contact to confirm attendance and transport. The exercise shows a decision pathway, not a claim that every proxy-parenting job uses the same authority.
Review workload and support
An extended-coverage label can hide evenings, nights, household administration and standby time. Put each part into a sample week, identify another adult who can relieve you, and ask how changes are recorded. O*NET describes ordinary nanny activities; this expanded work needs a job-specific brief.
Questions to take to the agency
- Which decisions require a parent’s approval?
- Who can relieve me during an extended absence?
- What is the backup route when parents cannot be reached?
