If an agency goes quiet or a profile shows “inactive,” ask what that means before assuming it has stopped representing you. The word may describe an account setting, your availability or an agency-wide decision; the label alone does not establish which. You deserve a clear answer about whether the agency is still considering you for opportunities.
This guide is about confirming your overall candidate status. It is separate from losing one role, withdrawing from a particular application or not receiving job alerts. It does not interpret contractual rights or determine what an agency is legally required to do.
Find the last confirmed status
Start with the last message explicitly describing your relationship with the agency. Was your registration accepted, your profile put on hold at your request, or your application closed? Record the wording and date.
Then note what has changed: an account label, a direct message, missing notifications or simply the passage of time. Keep the observation separate from the conclusion. “No contact since June” is an observation; “they removed me” needs confirmation.
British American Household Staffing links to a guide explaining phrases used in its own application system. That illustrates why provider-specific definitions matter. Its terminology does not establish what “inactive” means at your agency.
Separate four different questions
Use this original NAJ status worksheet to prevent a narrow decision becoming an unnecessarily broad conclusion.
| Question | Confirmation to seek |
|---|---|
| Has one opportunity ended? | The role reference and application outcome. |
| Is my profile unavailable for current matching? | What the agency's label means and whether an update is needed. |
| Has the agency ended consideration of me overall? | An explicit agency-wide answer and any outstanding administrative steps. |
| Did I ask to pause or stop contact? | Your original instruction and how the agency recorded it. |
Do not fill missing answers from another row. A family choosing someone else is not confirmation that the agency ended the relationship. A request to pause your search is not necessarily a request to delete your records. A newsletter arriving is not proof that active representation continues.
If you have several applications, identify them separately. One overall status answer may still leave an interview, pending submission or other role-specific commitment unresolved.
Ask for status and a concrete next action
Use the designated candidate contact or account-support route. Explain the observation that prompted your question, then ask whether you remain eligible for consideration through that agency's process. Avoid asking the recruiter to reassure you generally when a specific administrative answer is needed.
Invented example — adaptable message: “Hi Taylor, my profile now shows ‘inactive,’ and I would like to understand my current status. Does this mean I need to update my availability, that consideration is paused, or that the agency is no longer considering me for roles? I remain available from 15 November. Please let me know what this label means in your system and whether there is a next step for me. Thank you, Robin.”
Use only the options relevant to your situation and give truthful availability. If the agency has already communicated a final decision, do not frame it as an unexplained technical problem. Ask about the scope or remaining administration instead.
Respond to the answer you actually receive
If a profile update is requested, use the approved route and ask how you will know it has been processed. Save “update sent” separately from “status changed.” Completing a form does not establish what happened in someone else's system.
If consideration is paused, ask whether any future action belongs to you, such as reporting a genuine availability change. Do not assume a reopening date or keep submitting the same information to force a response.
If the agency confirms it will no longer consider you, record that agency-wide outcome accurately. You may ask whether feedback or review is available, without assuming either is offered. Keep practical closure separate from any disagreement about the decision.
Close loose ends and decide where to focus
Check outstanding interviews, document requests and messages for individual roles. Ask which are affected by the overall answer. If you want information about retained records or future communications, ask those questions explicitly rather than assuming that representation status resolves them.
If the status remains unclear, record the unanswered question and decide how much more time to spend seeking an answer through the available process. You can direct your effort toward other suitable opportunities while honoring any commitments you actually made.
A disappointing or unclear response need not become a judgment about your entire career. The useful outcome is a factual record of this agency relationship, an identified next action where one exists, and a search plan that does not depend on guessing.
